Students in grades K-2 at Bearcat Cyber Academy participated in a Black History Month Celebration. The purpose of the event was to highlight the important contributions that African-Americans have made to the world. Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Fluck, who are both K-2 teachers, believe that learning about African-American history is important for all students, regardless of their race. By studying this history, students can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the many ways that African-Americans have contributed to the world we live in today. To help students better understand African-American culture, the classroom was transformed into an African village. Flags made from African clothes were displayed, along with illustrations of Black historical figures. Bearcat Cyber Academy staff members even dressed up in traditional African attire. The lesson focused on Lonnie Johnson and his many inventions. The lesson was designed to integrate STEAM concepts, and students were encouraged to collaborate with partners to design a project using engineering concepts. Through this lesson, students came to understand that they, too, could be engineers and make history.
